The Rochester Academy of Medicine welcomes home the 2016-2017 Afternoon Concert Series! We are excited that our East Avenue home will once again be filled with music as always intended by the Lyon family. Music meets history this year in the friendship-themed series. The music selections will reflect how friendship between composers affected their musical careers. Join us in our salon on select Sundays to celebrate the return of the Afternoon Concert Series to our historic home.
This concert will feature music selections by composers Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The three big names of the classical period: Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Haydn was friends with both Mozart and Beethoven, but Beethoven never met Mozart, because by the time he arrived in Vienna, Mozart had unexpectedly died. One of Beethoven's reasons for moving to Vienna was to meet Mozart, so this was quite shocking for him. Haydn and Mozart met most likely in 1783, when Haydn was 52 and already the most celebrated composer in Europe, Mozart at 28 a rising star. It is said that they played chamber music together quite frequently, both being very accomplished on violin and viola. Mozart began writing string quartets because he was so impressed with Haydn's quartets.
Beethoven, the youngest of the three, met Haydn when he still lived in Bonn, 20 years old, Haydn was 58 at the time. Haydn encouraged Beethoven to come to Vienna and study with him, which he did two years later. Their relationship had it's ups and downs, especially since Beethoven's music became difficult to understand for the much older Haydn, but the two never stopped respecting each other.
