Prize Awards Contest 2009

To promote scholarship in medicine, the ROCHESTER ACADEMY OF MEDICINE is offering eight prize awards in the current contest, which will close March 2, 2009. Submissions are encouraged from all physicians (including residents and fellows), dentists, physician assistants, nurses (including NP, BSN, RN, LPN), and nursing students in the Seventh District Area of the New York State Medical and Dental Societies and all University of Rochester medical students. Some awards also include other professional groups as noted in the award categories. Prizes will be awarded at the Academy Annual Meeting May 2009. Prize recipients will be invited to attend the Annual Meeting and to prepare a short summary of their papers for display during a poster session.

The objective of these Awards is to promote scholarship in clinical medicine. To meet this objective, submissions relating to clinical and basic science research, case series/case reports, or summaries of key topics are encouraged; all submissions should include review of relevant literature.

 

Award Categories

Academy of Medicine Award in Honor of George H. Whipple, M.D.
Available to medical students at the University of Rochester. Prizes of $300 each for the best two papers on a medical subject describing a research project or experience. In recognition of Dr. Whipple and his interest in research, the papers should describe the student’s work conducting medical research, in either basic science or clinical medicine. Research conducted as part of international medicine experiences is reviewed as research in clinical medicine. (Sponsored by the Rochester Academy of Medicine)

Academy of Medicine Community and Preventive Medicine Award in Honor of Dr. Robert L. Berg
Available to physicians, physician assistants, nurses and medical students. $500 for the best paper pertaining to community/public health and/or preventive medicine. Recognizing Dr. Berg's contribution to our community's health, papers that report on propects that have improved the health of our community are encouraged. Academy of Medicine Library Award
Available to physicians, physician assistants, nurses, dentists, and medical students. $750 for the best paper on medical ethics or on the history of medicine or dentistry. This paper must include references to the relevant literature. (Sponsored by the Academy of Medicine)

Academy of Medicine Nursing Award
Available to all nurses and nursing students. $300 for the best paper contributing to the knowledge of nursing in any field. Papers describing clinical research are encouraged, as are those that review an important clinical issue in the field of nursing. (Sponsored by the Rochester Academy of Medicine)

Academy of Medicine Geriatrics Award in Honor of Carter and T. Franklin Williams
Available to health care professionals in training, for example, those studying for careers in medicine, nursing, physical therapy, and social work. $500 for the best paper on geriatric health care . In recognition of the important role Carter and Frank Williams have played in our community and nationally in caring for the elderly, this paper should address a topic in geriatrics that combines both medical and social issues. The paper can report on research findings or can be a scholarly review of an important topic in geriatric medicine. (Sponsored through a generous donation by Drs. Timothy and Beverly Kaiser)

Kluge Trauma and Emergency Medical Services Award
Available to all health care professionals (for example, Emergency Medicine physicians, EMT’s paramedics, nurses) and health care students. $500 for the best paper pertaining to trauma and emergency medical services. In recognition of Dr. Kluge’s interest in education and in this specific topic both regionally and nationally, the papers should include research or reviews about care of or planning for Trauma and Emergency Medical Services. Sidney Hillman Health Center Award in Honor of Dr. Robert Burton
Available to physicians, physician assistants, nurses, medical students and social workers. $500 for the best paper pertaining to workplace-related health care issues. Given Dr. Burton’s vision of labor, management, and the medical community creating a new approach to medical care for workers, this submission should describe projects or provide reviews that deal with occupational medicine, innovative approaches to providing employee health care, or other workplace-related health issues. Academy of Medicine Primary Care Award in Honor of Milton N. Luria, M.D. and William L. Morgan, M.D.
Available to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and medical students. $300 for the best paper pertaining to Adult Primary Care Medicine. Recognizing the importance Drs. Luria and Morgan placed on the doctor-patient relationship, research papers or reviews that emphasize the role of the patient and approaches to the patient in primary care are encouraged. GUIDELINES FOR PRIZE AWARD SUBMISSIONS

The contest closes on March 2, 2009. The individual submission should be an original and a suitable legible copy. Each should be placed in a separate thesis cover or manila folder. Illustrations such as charts, photographs, drawings and tables may be included.

The title of the paper should appear on the title page and the name of the award for which it is competing. The authors’ names should not appear on the title page or elsewhere in the paper. A separate sealed envelope containing the name, addresses, and telephone numbers (work and home) of the authors, with the title of the paper on the outside, should be submitted with the paper to the ROCHESTER ACADEMY OF MEDICINE, 1441 East Avenue, Suite 101, Rochester, New York 14610-1665 postmarked by March 2, 2009.

Only one prize will be awarded to a contestant and to a paper, although a contestant may submit more than one paper for any particular award, or for more than one award. Award submissions may also have been submitted for journal publication; however, they must not be published before April 1, 2009. Papers may have multiple authors. The award will be presented to the first author of the paper unless instructions to the contrary are included in the envelope containing the authors’ names. If the candidate for the award is not the first author, the candidate must indicate his/her contributions to the paper. All decisions of the Committee regarding the awards shall be final.
